Globe Creek Camp   May 23 - June 7, 2009

The team was made up of the following people (left to right):

Steve & Kayla Bouldin, Rob Paire, Tim Rudy (holding child), Mel Miller, Vaughn & Lisa Starr, Mike Dynes (front) and Carl Ginder

Our team leaders are veterans of the 2008 Globe Creek Camp Team that built the boy's and girl's cabins pictured above.

Rob Paire (dark blue shirt) has worked with LightShine Ministries for 8 years and has a heart for people and the ministry of the Word.   In the thumbnail photo to the left Rob is leading one of the daily Bible studies at camp.  Rob's goal is to someday help establish a property for LightShine Ministries in Alaska.

Mel Miller (camo jacket) is a talented craftsman who started working with LightShine last year and wants to encourage other men and women with construction abilities to use their gifts for Jesus Christ in Alaska.  He is dedicated to helping the staff of Globe Creek Camp establish their goals so they can minister to children in the Fairbanks region.

When we arrived at Globe Creek Camp, Mike Dynes informed us that he felt like the Lord was telling him that we should concentrate on working on the Lodge.  Last year work on the Lodge was suspended in order to build the cabins but it was time to continue work on the Lodge.  We all agreed and set about doing many tasks that Mike asked us to do.  Here is a list of what we did.

-Frame in gable ends and install soffits and face boards on two end gables and one rear gable.

-Strengthen Lodge floor by doubling up existing floor joist.  (This was in preparation for a new tile floor.)

-Grinding and sanding Logs. (This was to prepare for an oil finish.)

-Frame in two windows. (One on each side of the fireplace.)

-Build small deck and steps outside each back door of Lodge.

-Move gray water pit.  (This was a result of the kitchen being moved from a temporary outside structure into the Lodge)

-Move water heater into the Lodge.

-Move pressure tank into the Lodge.

-Install kitchen sink and plumbing.

-Paint Kitchen Cabinets.

-Finish roofing. (Cut valley shingles, installed ridge vents and ridge caps)

-Built trash storage bin.

-Built foot bridge across creek.

-Leveled and blocked up storage trailers.

-Raked grounds around the Lodge

-helped to build and install bird lodge

-planted vegetable garden including cabbage, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers and herbs.

-Assisted with cooking meals.

Work we did at Scott Ogan’s project in Seldovia

-Framed 20’x 34’ timber frame cabin.  (We installed all the support posts, beams, king pins, rafters and purlins.

-Cleared cabin area of logs and debris.

-Built rock barrier at top of beach to prevent eroding

-Dug and set supports for 10’ x 14’ bath and sauna house.

-Pulled old boat off beach area, raised and leveled boat.  (This boat is used for extra sleeping quarters and was used by Vaughn and Lisa while we stayed there.)

-Unbolted and pulled an old one cylinder diesel engine from old boat.  (This engine will be overhauled, restored and used to power a generator at the lodge)

-cooked, barbequed and prepared meals.

In addition to all we accomplished, we were able to relax, sightsee and take in a few side trips.  On top of that we got to see some beautiful, awesome scenery of Alaska.  We were well fed both physically by some super hosts and spiritually by Rob’s teaching.  We did deal with some sickness that was passed around among us, but praise God there were no serious accidents or events.

I was privileged to serve with this team,

Mel Miller
